Causes of Hair Loss In Men

Hair Loss is very unpleasant. In fact, surveys show 50 million men suffer from some kind of hair loss in North America. Most men describe hair loss as “depressing” or “stressful” and feel unattractive, insecure or past their prime. Some men feel that their hair loss has changed their lives. Some feel it has ruined their lives. By losing their hair, they feel they have become different people because of it, or they have missed chances or let opportunities slip away because of the way they’ve felt about themselves and their appearance.

The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenetic alopecia, also known as “male pattern” baldness. This “male pattern” baldness is caused by the effects of the male hormone “dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on scalp hair follicles. The areas of the head that are more prone to DHT are in the front, top and crown. This “male pattern” baldness is best described by the Norwood Classification chart.

It is understood that each hair sits in a follicle which unfortunately shrinks over time resulting in the loss of that hair. Usually, the hair will grow back, however in balding men the hair will eventually thin to the point of falling out. In spite of the small follicle, they are still active which allows our experts to successfully plant new hairs.

- There multiple causes of male pattern baldness, the majority of which can be corrected.

Androgenetic Alopecia is a genetically disposed condition which results in male pattern baldness. It is the result of high levels of testosterone which is converted into dihydrotestosterone also known as DHT. DHT usually has an undesirable affect on hair follicles, due to the fact that it dramatically reduces the production of hair resulting in weak and thin hair. It may also stop hair growth completely causing sizeable hair loss.

Traction Alopecia is a condition of hair loss which is mainly occurs in people who wear tight ponytails, cornrows, or braided weave extensions. These hair styles tend to pull on the hair with excessive force causing bald spots to occur. However this condition is easily treatable.

Iron deficiency can also cause hair loss, although it usually only resulting in the thinning of existing hair.

Major physical trauma such as, chemotherapy, severe emotional or psychological stress or major surgery may result in a condition called telogen effluvium. This condition occurs when such trauma’s cause the mass shedding of hair from the scalp. Fortunately this can be remedied quite easily.
