Causes of Hair Loss In Women

The patterns of hair loss in women are not as easily recognizable as those in men. Nearly 33 million women over the age of 18 in Canada and in the United States suffer hair loss, thinning or balding. It’s surprising that almost 40 percent of these women never expected it would happen to them. The majority of female hair loss is a direct result of increased hormone activity. These may be due to pregnancy, menopause, ovarian cysts, certain birth control brands as well as polycystic ovary syndrome. Certain thyroid disorders can also be the cause of female hair loss. In such cases, we strongly recommend our various non-surgical procedures. To find out more please visithttp://www.surehair.comin order to book your FREE consultation.

Patterns that may occur include:

  • Diffuse thinning of hair over the entire scalp, often with more noticeable thinning toward the back of the scalp.
  • Diffuse thinning over the entire scalp, with more noticeable thinning toward the front of the scalp but not involving the frontal hairline.
  • Diffuse thinning over the entire scalp, with more noticeable thinning toward the front of the scalp, involving and sometimes breaching the frontal hairline.

Telogen Effluvium occurs when hair goes into a resting or shock phase after any type of change. This type of resting hair shedding may occur as a result of pregnancy and up to three to six months after giving birth. Telogen Effluvium may also be caused when a woman loses a great deal of weight in a short period of time, possibly through a crash diet.

Alopecia Areata is when bald spots suddenly appear here or there or when little, tiny hairs that break off become noticeable. Areata is Latin for round. It’s often related to a stressful event, and it’s believed to be some type of immunologic imbalance where the immune system goes after its own hair for some unknown reason and causes them to go into the resting phase and slow down their growth so they break off or come out. However, in most cases it re-grows by itself.
